I got the idea for the carrot milkshake from my dear friend AK. When we went over to her house for dinner, she served this lovely cool shake to us. The shake looked great with the frothy top and a slight peach shade of color. We never knew that it was carrot but got a wonderful flavor of the cardamom. I really thought it was made with some exotic fruit! (Goes to show how much I know about carrots!) I would never have guessed that it was a carrot shake and was pleasantly surprised! This is an excellent beverage to cool you down during the hot summer months and is healthy too! This here is the best way to get your kids to have a healthy drink! It makes a good breakfast too. The addition of cardamom really gives an added layer of taste and makes it great. Final verdict: fantastic!
This is my entry to "Think Spice: Think Cardamom" event hosted by EasyCrafts of Simple Indian Food. The "Think Spice" event was started by Sunita of Sunita’s World. Cardamom is frequently used in Indian cooking for everything from curries, rice to even desserts. It definitely is one of my favourite spices!
Recipe (Serves 2):
Whole milk - 10 oz
Carrot - 1 large, grated
Cardamom seeds - from 3 pods, powdered or 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
Granulated sugar - 1 1/2 tbsp
Ice cubes - 4
Wash, peel and grate the carrot.
In a blender, add milk, sugar, carrot, powdered cardamom and ice cubes.
Blend well until frothy.
Strain the shake through a seive.
- If using cardamom seeds, crush the seeds finely.
- Low-fat milk can be used instead of whole milk.
- The carrot can be cut again after grating to make it finer so that it can be served without straining, with an occasional bite into grated carrot.
